Whyte to represent Scotland

-

THE BOXING season is building to a crescendo over the next two or three months for Lochaber Phoenix Boxing Club as all the club’s boxers, including some debutants, are scheduled to box by June.

This weekend sees the culmination of the GB championships for the junior and youth age levels and the Lochaber club are lucky enough to have in their ranks Cameron Whyte who will represent Scotland in the 48-50kg Junior category.

He hopes to continue his great success from last season where he annexed the Scottish and GB titles at Schoolboy level in addition to a European championships silver.

This weekend the odds are stacked against Cameron repeating that feat as not only is he at the younger end of his age category but his weight division includes Repton Boxing Club’s Barney Docherty.

Last season he not only won the European championships in the weight division above Cameron but was also voted the boxer of the tournament, effectively becoming the pound-for-pound best Schoolboy boxer in Europe.

Cameron always seems to rise to a challenge, however, and has prepared in his usual diligent manner with at least 10 training sessions a week since capturing the Scottish Junior title on the first weekend of March.

Last Friday he traveled to Inverness in the afternoon for quality sparring with Highland Boxing Academy’s former Scottish champion Darrell Russell. He then attended a boxing show in Huntly on Friday night before arriving in Glasgow for 10am on Saturday for Scotland training.

Cameron leaves on Friday morning to travel to the venue in Sheffield with the rest of the Scottish team.

The other members of the Phoenix club hope to feature in shows all over Scotland before appearing in the Nevis Centre in Fort William on May 13. Tickets are available from the Nevis Centre or anyone involved with the club.
