Kyokushink­ai Karate

On July 7 seven members from the Argyll Caledonia Kyokushin clubs along with others from the Stirling and Perth clubs made the long journey south to the National Summer Training Camp in the Peak District in England. Local instructor Iain Rodger was one of the senior instructor­s at the camp.

After arriving on Friday afternoon and settling in, the training started at 7pm with a tough session. Saturday consisted of training at 6.45am until 8am, 10am-noon, 2-5pm, then 7- 8pm.

Sunday was 6.45- 8am followed by 10am-noon. After lunch on the Sunday everyone departed tired and aching to make their way home.

After the last training session, Wallace Simpson and Mhairi Weldon from the Lochgilphe­ad club were presented with their new dan grade certificat­es. Also at the camp, local instructor Iain Rodger was awarded with his sixth dan black belt by the Executive Committee of the IKKU.

Shukokai Karate

All three clubs under Argyll Martial Arts had their grading and prize giving last week. The following students received awards for student of the year in their respective clubs. Senior (Oban) Gregor Warnock, Junior (Oban) Conan Burns, Senior (Inveraray) Archie McColl, Junior (Inveraray) Douglas Cameron. Senior (Dalmally) Tina Bell, Junior (Dalmally) Emily Wragg. Club Instructor Kenny Gray said: ‘Thanks to assistant instructor­s Flo McBurnie, Andrew Buchanan, and Andrew Lawson for their dedication to the club over the past 12 months. We start again after the summer break on August 22. New students aged 5+ are welcome to start any time although the beginning of the session is preferred’.

Kickboxing

Sessions continue as normal with the Juniors at 6.30pm and Seniors 7.30pm on Wednesdays, Juniors 11am and Women Only at 2pm on Sundays.
