Revamped dementia resource centre opens

-

THE recently refurbished Oban Dementia Resource Centre reopened its doors last Friday with ‘tea and mocktails’, writes David McPhee.

Dozens of people made their way to the High Street premises for the grand opening to see how the centre had grown, incorporating a new group room.

The centre provides people living with, or wanting to learn more about dementia, a place to get advice and support.

Ann Frost and Alan Adair were tasked with cutting the opening ribbon. They were described as true examples of people who don’t let the condition ruin their lives.

Speaking about how important the centre was, Ann said: ‘It’s an important place because if anyone is in trouble or needs advice you can just phone up here.’

Sue Pagan, dementia adviser, said: ‘People automatically assume that someone living with dementia is not capable of living a productive life.

‘An analogy I like to use is someone who has played golf all their life and they start to have difficulty keeping score and they are a little bit embarrassed.

‘For someone with dementia, they can still hit the ball and can still enjoy the game, but they can’t do the finer parts of it.’

The Oban Dementia Resource Centre not only offers advice, but it also hosts regular themed events such as musical memories and reminiscing.
