A TRIO of athletes from Mid Argyll have been praised for each bringing home medals from the Special Olympics.

Flora Currie, Campbell Ferguson and Iain Macdougall were part of the Boccia team representing Scotland West at this year’s event in Sheffield.

More than 1,200 athletes from across Scotland, England and Wales participated in a series of hard-fought competitions in 20 sports at the Ponds Forge Arena.

The first two days saw the Mid Argyll group compete in five different competitions, with Iain taking the gold, Campbell picking up silver and Flora getting a bronze.

However, it was at the end of a truly hard week that the Scotland West squad showed their skill to pit their strengths against the best teams from Tayside, Dumfries, Yorkshire and Humberside, South East England, Northern Region, Greater London and the Midlands.

Teams from Scotland West competed in different competitions and in the end came away with a team gold, team silver and a fourth.

Argyll and Bute Council’s Provost Len Scoullar said: ‘I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Scotland West team for their outstanding achievements.

‘They are an inspiration and I am very proud of each one of them. They have put Lochgilphead on the map and I wish them every success in the future with the sport.’
