The movement of an extra wide load through Oban last Wednesday, which caused damage to railings on the pedestrian island at Argyll Square, caused comment. Finlay MacDougall complained: ‘Once again, highlights the poor planning of Argyll Square. Not to mention the joke that is George St, with three sets of lights plus various traffic islands. Zero traffic flow and idiots jumping in front of cars!’

Nicola Wilson asked: ‘Why didn’t they take it around the other side...against the traffic...like they did on Esplanade??? Bet it’s our council tax that’ll foot the repair bill to.’

James Mccahey wrote: ‘Road system’s a joke; need a bypass.’

Mark Stuart said: ‘Might this be a call for an Oban by-pass?’

William Burgess offered: ‘It clearly states in the Highway Code about legally sized vehicles and loads allowed on the road.

‘The planning team should read this before planning the square.

A call for live-streaming of Argyll and Bute Council meetings online garnered plenty of support. Colin Martin posted: ‘It’s interesting that the equipment is already in place because the Provost told me in an e-mail the other day, “I was being continually pestered to sign a petition which I felt had not been properly evaluated economically.” If the equipment is there what justification does he have in not turning it on!’

Steve Letford agreed: ‘What possible valid objection could anyone have to this? Anything that informs and engages the electorate surely leads to us making better decisions at council elections and consequentially getting councillors who are better for us and Argyll and Bute - and by golly we could do with that considering some of the representatives we have just now.’
