Tributes paid to Lochaber man
FRIENDS and family have paid tribute to a Fort William man who died suddenly last week while on a golfing holiday.
Martin Duncan, 35, from Caol, died while on holiday in Ireland with around 20 members of Fort William Golf Club, including his father, James Duncan, who is a steward at the club.
The group had not long arrived on their trip when Martin, an offshore worker, collapsed. His death is believed to have been caused by a heart attack.
Martin leaves a widow Siobhan and two young daughters.
Tributes were paid to Martin last week as Lochaber’s sporting community came together to mourn the loss of one of its most popular figures. A keen golfer and shinty player, Martin was involved in a number of clubs in the area, most prominently Fort William Golf Club and Kilmallie Shinty Club. Having represented the club for many
years, Kilmallie paid tribute to Martin at the weekend as players and supporters released 50 blue and white balloons - to mark the club’s colours - in his memory. It was a fitting tribute to hold the tribute at a youth match given that Martin was a keen supporter of youth shinty and often watched his nephew play for the club at Canal Parks.
A statement from Kilmallie Shinty Club said: ‘Martin played at every level for Kilmallie Shinty Club and was gifted with great ability. Everyone’s thoughts are with Siobhan and the family at this time.’
The club called off all of its senior matches at the weekend as a mark of respect.
This has been a particularly difficult year for the club as it is still reeling from the death of fellow internationalist Duncan Rodger, 29, who passed away in May this year.
Martin’s funeral was held at
St John’s Church in Caol on Tuesday.
