Oban Bay pontoons officially open for business
THE OBAN bay pontoons were officially opened last Thursday and it is estimated that they will generate a £25 million boost for the area, according to Argyll and Bute Council’s provost, writes David McPhee.
In the opening ceremony, which was kicked off by provost Len Scoullar, he said it would generate the £25 million over the next 20 years.
‘Today is about focusing on what the facility will achieve for Oban and the surrounding area,’ he told the crowd.
‘Conservative estimates indicate a £25 million boost to the local economy over the next 20 years. I am no banker, but I would say that more than justifies the £1.5 million that has been spent.
‘This new step-ashore facility is an easy access marine gateway into one of Argyll and Bute’s most exciting and vibrant towns.’
Oban High School Pipe Band were also on hand to entertain the crowd.
Two band members, Marley Squire and Innes Munro, joined Cathy MacGregor and Mairi Malloy as they cut the ribbon to officially open the pontoons.
Elaine Robertson, councillor for Oban and Lorn, said: ‘This fabulous new pontoon development is something we have been looking forward to for many, many years. Depending on who you speak to it ranges between 10 and 40.’
