Inveraray
The Royal Burgh that has it all...
ON the A83 along Loch Fyne lies the striking whitewashed town of Inveraray, built by the 3rd Duke of Argyll in the 1700s. Perched on a hilltop high above, visible from most directions, is the beguiling silhouette of the Dun na Cuaiche watchtower, an early clue to the eclectic nature of the Royal Burgh of Inveraray.
Out of a Fairytale
The town’s biggest attraction is Inveraray Castle, the living home of the Duke and Duchess of Argyll, and it is one of the most beautiful castles in the west of Scotland. It boasts fairytale turrets and a magical setting at the heart of the historic Argyll Estates. Used as a location for the filming of Downton Abbey, the castle and gardens are open for tours, where visitors can see a huge collection of historic weaponry and artefacts related to the duchy. Once a year, the castle welcomes lovers of Highland culture from all around the world for the annual Best of the West Festival.
