UNITED AUCTIONS held its annual show and sale of Blackface lambs also sale of cross bred lambs and feeding sheep at Dalmally Auction Mart. A catalogued entry of almost 11,000 lambs and sheep sold to a good ringside of buyers. Prices realised reflected current trends when sale averages fell by £3.20 per head on the year. However, noted lots of lambs, annually sold at this popular event, recorded a drop of two-three kilos on the year while others maintained their weight and consequent­ly sold at levels on a par with last year. Top and second draw Blackface lambs sold well whilst third and fourth draws were harder to cash. Judging of the Blackface lambs was in the capable hands of Mr Ian Stewart, Easter Cash Farm, Strathmigl­o, who awarded the placings as follows:

Champion pen taking the James Weir Memorial Trophy – M/s Buchanan, Achnaba which realised £60.50. Second – Clachan Farm, Kilninver - £58. Third – Tayvallich Estate - £54. All three lots were purchased by Mr Donald Heuchan, Castle Douglas.

UNITED AUCTIONS held its second sale of lambs and sheep at Islay Auction Mart when they had 2,706 head forward. Averages for the day recorded a drop of £1.60 per head or 06 pence per kilo. Lambs were well shown in general although the recent inclement weather was evident on some lots. Prices realised compared very favourable to current levels obtained at principal mainland centres.

DINGWALL AND HIGHLAND MARTS LTD, (September 6) sold 85 store cattle, 39 adult head of breeding cattle and 31 OTM cattle.

Bullocks (27) averaged 214.0p and sold to 325.0p per kg for an 80kg Aberdeen Angus cross from Proncy Farm, Dornoch, and £1,120 gross for a pair of 510kg Limousin crosses from Carrol Farm, Brora.

Heifers (58) averaged 206.3p for a Charolais cross heifer and sold to 243.5p per kg for a 345kg Charolais cross from Pitmain Farm, Kingussie, and £1,220 gross for a 555kg Limousin cross from Redhill, Allanfearn.

Cows with heifer calves at foot (16) sold to £1,750 gross for a Charolais cross cow with a Whitebred shorthorn cross calf at foot from Dunlichity Farm, Farr.

Cows with male calves at foot (22) sold to £1,850 gross for a Hereford cross cow with a Charolais cross calf at foot from Dunlichity Farm.

Heifers with male calves at foot (1) sold to £1,000 for a British blue cross with a British blue cross calf at foot from Shewglie Farm, Glenurquha­rt.

OTM prime and feeding cows (27) averaged 136.1p and sold to 162.0p per kg for a 685kg pure Charolais from East Kirk, Wick, and £1,270 gross for an 845kg Simmental cross from Ballone, Abriachan.

OTM bulls (4) sold to 111.9p per kg for an 885kg pure Simmental from Belladrum mills, Kiltarlirt­y and £1150 gross for an 1105kg Aberdeen Angus from Torachilty, Contin.
