North Argyll teams kick off Mini Rugby season

-

MINI Rugby teams at Oban Lorne, Etive Vikings, Mid Argyll and Isle of Mull have had a busy start to the 2017/18 season with two Dalriadas over the past couple of weeks along with an Oban/Etive P5 trip to Glasgow Warriors.

On Saturday September 2 the Mini Rugby season kicked off with the first Dalriada Festival of the season hosted by Oban Lorne at Glencruitten. Visiting Oban on the day were teams from Etive Vikings, Mid Argyll and Isle of Mull RFC.

Mid Argyll ran out close winners at each age group by winning all their P4/5 games and coming out on top in terms of tries scored on the day after being tied on points with Etive Vikings in the P6/7 section.

All the teams produced a good show of rugby despite some rustiness to start the new season.

The following Sunday the teams met again at Taynuilt Community Sports Field as Etive Vikings hosted the second festival of the new season.

With only the hosts, Oban and Mid Argyll present the fixtures were played out with added game time on the perfect underfoot conditions despite the weekend’s heavy rain.

On this occasion it was the hosts who were victorious at both age groups by winning all of their matches apart from a P6/7 0-0 draw with Mid Argyll - this game was abandoned due to the severity of the rainfall.

A huge improvement was shown by all of the teams from the previous weekend’s festival.

The sides will have a chance to improve once more as Isle of Mull host the third festival of the season at Garmony next Saturday from 11am. It is hoped that Kintyre RFC, Islay RFC and Lochaber RFC will turnout for Dalriadas later in the season.

Oban Lorne and Etive Vikings P5 visit Glasgow Warriors

A P5 team from Oban Lorne and Etive Vikings was invited to take part in a pre-match festival at Glasgow Warriors’ first home match of the season last Saturday in the PRO14 competition.

The squad of 10 P5s faced some formidable opposition in the form of Marr, Dalziel and Perthshire. The joint Oban/ Vikings side lost out in all of their matches but impressed against a very high quality of opposition. The highlight of the day for the young players was forming part of the guard of honour at kick off for both the Warriors and Ospreys to enter the pitch.

All of the squad had a great time and have been encouraged to attend Warriors games in the future. Everyone at Oban Lorne and Etive Vikings would like to thank Glasgow Warriors’ community team for a great day out.
