Currie wins rally GB prize
TOBERMORY’S Alasdair Currie won last weekend’s season finale of the DMACK Fiesta ST Trophy – The Trackrod Rally Yorkshire. Currie and co-driver Steven Brown have now secured second overall in the championship which wins the duo a prize drive in a Ford Fiesta R2 backed by CASTROL on the British round of the World Rally Championship in two weeks time.
The pair set the pace from the first stage of the day to lead all the way to the finish despite catching and being held up by cars along the narrow Yorkshire forestry roads.
Alasdair said: ‘I’m delighted to have finally won a round of the championship. We’ve had a good year despite no prior experience of any of these rallies. This has been my first season competing in the forests and I have exceeded all my own expectations.’
This year hasn’t been without challenge. Two mid-season mechanical retirements whilst leading were frustrating. A lack of budget also limited any opportunity to test.
Alasdair joins John MacCrone as one of few to drive the rare CASTROL Ford Fiesta R2 car. John used this car as car #1, on the 2014 Mull Rally. How ironic.
‘We are now focusing on preparations for our prize drive. We are grateful to all sponsors who come onboard to allow us to fight for this position. Rally GB is an iconic event, one that every British rally driver dreams to be part of one day and I will make the most of this amazing opportunity.’
