Mathsfest adds up to fun at Oban High School

-

MORE than 40 primary school pupils counting the days to starting high school in August have taken part in a one-day Mathsfest.

The event was organised at Oban High School as part of its transition programme, giving youngsters a taste of what the new academic year will bring.

Primary pupils from 14 of the high school’s feeder primaries worked in teams with older students to solve practical and written maths problems.

The two overall winning teams were both made up of St Columba’s Primary and Oban High pupils.

Principal teacher of maths Nan Johnstone, who was helped by subject teacher Ruth Livingstone, said: ‘It was lovely to see them all engaged in maths so happily.’

The school’s first Mathsfest was in 2000 marking the Year of Maths and it has been an annual event since.

St Columba’s pupil Calan McGuigan, 11, said he had visited the high school for a gymnastics competition before but enjoyed Mathsfest too. ‘I’m looking forward to starting high school because there’s lots of different subjects but I like maths best.’

And Jakub Kondraciuk, also 11 and from St Columba’s, added: ‘I’m looking forward to starting at a brand new school. It’s going to be exciting.’

The new-build Oban High School is expected to open later this year.
