Mull sports hall athletics

A TOTAL of 67 young athletes competed in the Mull contest of Sports Hall Athletics held in Salen Primary School.

Pupils from Salen primary school dominated in the morning session for the three younger age groups winning five out of the six age groups and easily retaining the primary schools trophy ahead of Bunessan with Tobermory in third place.

Twelve girls entered the under seven age group, with Sienna Munro from Salen winning all five events with some style ahead of Ciara Cameron from Bunessan who was second on overall points and Sienna’s twin sister Kiyana in third place.

Palmo Jones from Bunessan was the under-9 champion thanks to wins in the javelin, speed bounce and triple jump. Salen girls filled the next four places with Robin Stanley-Wright in second place only just ahead of Erin Greig, Flora Thorne and Eilidh Cameron.

Eleven girls contested a competitiv­e under-11 age group with champion Ellen MacRae from Salen impressing in winning the high jump and triple jump and placed second in three other events. Lexie Dalgleish was the runner up to Ellen and another Salen girl Evie Kellett was third overall.

Lexie won the javelin with a 12m throw while Evie won a close four-lap race in 28.3 seconds and also the speed bounce with 72 jumps in 30 seconds. In the same age category Gemma Cameron from Bunessan won the standing long jump.

Keira Munro from Salen and an S1 pupil at Tobermory High School won the under-13 contest ahead of Katie-Qiu MacCrone from Tobermory and Lily Howitt from Salen primary. Keira won the triple jump, high jump shot putt and tied with Katie-Qiu in the speed bounce. Katie-Qiu won the four-lap race and Lily won the standing long jump.

Bunessan girls Abbie Cato and Katie Edmundson were the under-15 and under-17 winners.

It was a close contest in the under-7 boys’ competitio­n with only two points separating champion Kian Gibson from Salen and Lewis Cattanach from Tobermory. Kian won the four-lap race, triple jump and speed bounce. Lewis won the long jump and javelin.

Salen boys filled the top five places in the under-9s with Liam Munro the champion ahead of Ruaridh Dalgleish and Bailey Brown. Liam won the javelin and high jump with Ruaridh winning the four-lap race in 30.9 and also the long jump. Bailey was the winner in the triple jump.

Salen once again provided the winner in the under-11 boys with Euan MacPhail the winner ahead of Malik Clowes from Dervaig and Logan Gibson from Salen who shared second place on overall points. Euan won the four-lap race, high jump and triple jump. Malik threw 16 metres to win the javelin and Logan won the long jump.

James Edmundson from Bunessan won the under-13s contest just ahead of Alexander Quinn from Salen.
