Helping young people to make most of talents
DID you know that 2018 is the Scottish Government’s Year of Young People?
This is a year of events that aims to bring generations together and celebrate our nation’s young people. It is a platform to give young people a stronger voice on issues which affect their lives, showcase their ideas and talents and ultimately aims to chal- lenge misconceptions and create a more positive perception of them in society.
At Lochaber Chamber of Commerce, it’s a vital part of our work to help young people develop their talents and find meaningful work that meets their needs and aspirations and those of local employers.
We do this primarily through our Developing the Young Workforce West Highlands team. Based in our office in Fort William High Street, the dedicated team of three are engaged in helping pupils through a variety of initiatives run in conjunction with high schools across Lochaber, Skye and Wester Ross.
Mock interviews, job fairs, setting up work placements and apprenticeships are all part of the work that the team does in helping young people get ready to not just join the workforce, but get the best out of themselves and identify potential opportunities. They also work with employers to make sure that they understand what they need from their future workforce.
With Scottish Apprenticeship Week coming up from March 5-9, it’s a great time to think about whether your company might be able to help someone’s career get off to a flying start by taking on an apprentice. Find out more at www.dywwesthighland. org.
