Gardening project needs community support to grow

-

STUDENTS at SAMS are hoping to turn an overgrown corner on their campus into a vegetable garden but they need the community to dig in and help them.

Marine science undergraduate Daniel Haan came up with the idea after admiring a friend’s parents’ potato plot in France.

Now he has rallied a group of fellow students to help transform a patch of ground at the Dunbeg site but they need donations of gardening equipment to make a start on it.

‘We are starting this from scratch – at the moment the plot is just an over-grown corner.

‘We’re looking for tools and supplies, from hoes, trowels and pitchforks to pallets and pots. Anything unwanted that people have stashed in their sheds would be a huge help,’ said Daniel.

One supply they won’t be short of is seaweed. Daniel said: ‘Using seaweed in the garden isn’t a new idea but we’ll be experimenting with it to see just what we can make happen with it.

‘Hopefully we’ll get things growing soon and then we plan to eat it.’

Anyone with tools or supplies to spare should message Danial Haan on Facebook.
