Caledonian Marts on Monday March 26 sold 341 native bred store cattle at its spring show and sale, which was kindly sponsored by Hugh O’Neill and Sons, Ayr, and supported by the Shorthorn Cattle Society and Morrisons supermarke­ts.

The judge was John Ramshay, Garth House, Dalton, Thirsk, and the following were his awards:

Champion was a yearling Shorthorn bullock from Niall Bowser, Argaty, Doune which sold for £1,180 to J Paterson, Garrionhau­gh, Lanark. Reserve Champion was a Luing heifer from R McNee Ltd, Woodend, Armadale, which realised £960 to Jim Brown, Gaindykehe­ad, Airdrie. Champion pen of four in the yard were Shorthorn bullocks from J Dunlop, Blackwater, Kilmacolm which sold for £1110. Aberdeen Angus bullocks sold to 273p for a pen of 11 from M McDonald, Beachmenac­h,Tayinloan to average 248ppkg. Shorthorn bullocks sold to 263p (twice) from RSPB Lochgruina­rt and AG Simpson, Portend, Port of Menteith to average 223ppkg. Luing Bullocks sold to 222p from R McNee Ltd to average 217ppkg.

Hereford bullocks sold to 254p from A J Mackie, High Belltrees, Lochwinnoc­h to average 244ppkg.

Belted Galloway bullocks sold to 216p from W Glover, Cladville, Isle of Islay to average 202ppkg. Aberdeen Angus heifers sold to 240p from Beachmenac­h, Tayinloan to average 220ppkg. Shorthorn heifers sold to 236p from RSPB, Isle of Islay to average 202ppkg. Hereford heifers sold to 243p from AG and ME Bateman, Langholm, Campbeltow­n to average 234ppkg.

United Auctions on Thursday March 23 sold 8,221 prime sheep comprising of 34 new season lambs selling to an average of 269.91p and 6,293 old season lambs selling to an average of 229.64p and 1,852 ewes and rams.

Caledonian Marts on Thursday March 22 sold 185 cattle comprising 91 prime bullocks, heifers and young bulls, and 94 cast cows and bulls. A smaller show of cattle would be dearer on the week, and many more could have been sold. Prime bullocks averaged 212ppkg.

Prime heifers averaged 222ppkg. Young bulls averaged 184ppkg. Cast beef cows averaged 143ppkg.

Cast dairy cows averaged 120ppkg.

Bullocks topped at 258ppkg from Learielaw, Broxburn purchased by T. Johnston Butchers, Falkirk and to £1,635 from the same farm. Heifers topped at 255p from Learielaw to Hugh A Black and Sons and to £1,632 from Mains of Cultmalund­ie, Perth to Hugh A Black and Sons. Bulls sold to 228p for a Charolais from Lower Crawtree Farming to J F Findlay and Co, Wishaw and to £1,709 from Cairnbog, Kilsyth to CM Kirkpatric­k. Leading prices:

Beef cows averaged 143ppkg selling to 165p for a Limousin from W and R Thomson, Cairnbog and to £1,480 for a British Blue from R and M Paterson, Upper Auchenlay. Dairy cows averaged 120p selling to 144p from A W and J Broom, Solsgirth and to £1040 for the same beast.

Bulls sold to 155p for a Limousin from A Morton, Lochend and to £1305 for the same beast. Other leading prices:
