Double delight for Inverlochy youth shinty teams at national finals
THE TRAVIS Perkins National finals brought together more than 200 of the best young players from across Scotland all vying for the coveted National P5 and P7 titles.
The P7-and-under tournament was played at the Nevis Centre, Fort William recently in front of a large and noisy crowd. The standard of play throughout the day was of the highest order with all the 14 teams giving a great account of themselves.
Section A saw the impressive Bute primaries top the group on maximum points with another south team, Kilmory, two points behind, claiming the runners-up spot.
Section B was dominated by the excellent Inverlochy side topping the group, with Taynuilt clinching second spot on goal difference from Aberdour.
The semi-finals were hotly contested, with the two section winners proving too strong in the end, with Bute defeating Taynuilt 4 - 0 and Inverlochy edging past Kilmory by the same scoreline to set-up an intriguing final.
The final started with Inverlochy on the attack and they took an early lead through the classy Rhys Kennedy.
Bute responded and went close to equalising, only for Inverlochy to score again with a well-taken goal by Ben Britton.
Deadly duo
Inverlochy scored a further two goals from the deadly duo of Rhys Kennedy and Ben Britton to win the P7-and-under National First Shinty Championships 2018.
Willie MacDonald the Camanachd Association’s youth director presented the trophy and medals to all the players.
The Fair Play Award went to Drakies Primary School in Inverness.
The P5-and-under competition took place at Lochaber High School and the large crowd was entertained with an afternoon of fantastic shinty.
Inverlochy and Taynuilt/ Lochnell schools qualified from a highly competitive Section A, with Portree and Newtonmore primary schools qualifying from Section B.
The semi-finals affairs with the were close impressive Inverlochy defeating a young Newtonmore side 3-1 and Taynuilt/Lochnell edging Portree Primary 4 -1 to set up an exciting final.
The final was a highly competitive encounter with the talented and impressive Inverlochy side proving too strong in the end for a gallant Taynuilt/Lochnell side by running out worthy 3 - 1 winners.
