Local pipers blow hot at youth competitio­n

LOCHABER Piping Society’s annual youth competitio­n attracted young pipers from across the Highlands to Lochaber High School, in Fort William, on Saturday.

Adjudicato­rs for the event were Euan MacCrimmon, John Don Mackenzie, Iain Hurst, Bill Geddes and Duncan Nicolson.

Society committee member Rona Cameron said there was a good turn-out for the competitio­n, although organisers would always like to see more young pipers competing for the trophies.

‘Local Lochaber pipers did well, which is always good to see, and we had super judges,’ Mrs Cameron said. ‘We are also very grateful to all of our sponsors for their support and backing of the event.’

Local winners were among those picking up trophies. The Hugh MacPhee Memorial Quaich for the Lochaber boy or girl with the highest points in events one, two and three went to Connie MacLennan.

The Buchanan Shield for the Lochaber boy or girl with the highest points in events 4a and 4b went to Struan Robertson.

The Fort William Town Council Cup for the Lochaber girl competitor with the highest points in all events except one, two, three and four went to Laura Robertson.

The John MacLellan Trophy for the Lochaber boy competitor with the highest score points in all events except one, two, three and four went to Andrew Orr and Ronnie Macintosh.

The Evan MacRae Trophy for the Lochaber competitor with the highest points in event 10 (Piobaireac­hd 15-18 years) went to Amber MacDonald.

The Roddie MacDonald Memorial Quaich for the Lochaber competitor with the highest points in either event eight or 11 went to Laura Robertson.
