View from the Chamber

-

AT THE beginning of March, a trade delegation from Lochaber Chamber of Commerce visited Nova Scotia in Canada to develop stronger trade links, build business relationships and make use of the extensive international network of Chambers of Commerce.

Cape Breton was chosen as a partner area because of the many cultural and historical ties between Lochaber and Nova Scotia, as well as the similarities in business activities.

Three Chambers of Commerce were visited: Sydney and Area near Inverness; The Strait Area, which has links to Newfoundland via a ferry from Sydney; and Halifax, Nova Scotia.

This international trade visit, supported by the Scottish Government and led by the Scottish Chambers network, had several objectives alongside the main aim of providing new business opportunities for Scottish business.

Lesley Benfield, CEO of Lochaber Chamber of Commerce, said: ‘There is huge potential for us to increase inbound tourism from Canada. There is already a deep affinity for all things Scottish, and Canada is among Scotland’s top 20 export markets.

‘We’re delighted that two local businesses in the delegation, West Highland Hotel in Mallaig and Pixel Spirits based in Onich, have already received business inquiries and bookings from connections made during our packed few days.’

This business delegation was an exciting first step towards increased co-operation between the two areas.

Summing up the trip, Lesley said: ‘We’re excited to have made stronger connections with Chambers of Commerce in Nova Scotia that will lead to us working together, learning from each other and increasing opportunities for all our members.’

At Lochaber Chamber of Commerce, we’re committed to helping our members achieve their business goals.
