Oban Sea Cadets give no quarter
OBAN Sea Cadets attended a weekend of intensive boating instruction at Inverness over the May bank holiday.
A superb weekend of fun and practical instruction focused on power-boat handling and fixedseat rowing. They also took part in the annual district afloat rowing competition on the Caledonia Canal, at Muirtown Basin, Inverness.
This was an exciting event resulting in a joint third place with Lochabar Sea Cadets. Oban were up against tough, and more experienced, groups of rowing teams having to find the stamina to compete after a long day of training.
Oban, along with teams from Orkney, Thurso, Moray, Inverness and Lochabar, gave no quarter as they battled out for the finishing line.
Coxwains, screaming at the top of their lungs, instructed their crews to ‘pull ahead’ as the yells echoed over the canal basin with an alarming tone.
Tourists and passers-by walking the canal banks were taken by surprise by the sudden noise and then quickly joined in with cheers of encouragement to the competitors.
The next rowing event will be in July at Dunstaffnage Marina, where Oban Sea Cadets will have an internal divisions race, with events for both senior and junior cadets in the Peter Bentley Rowing Cup.
Congratulations to 1st Class Cadet Kate Home, 1st Class Cadet Cameron Johnston (RYA Level 2 Power Boat), Cadet William Sykes, Cadet Callum Neil (RYA Power Boat Level 1), on successfully completing and passing their RYA qualifications. Cadet Liam Byers gained his Rowing Competent Crew skills qualification which is a British Rowing Award – Go Row 2 (Fixed Seat).
Oban Sea Cadets continue to provide fun and adventure activities resulting in cadets achieving quality training and gaining nationally recognised qualifications.
There are vacancies for junior cadets aged 10 to 12.
