Mallaig pay the price against clinical Kyleakin

-

MALLAIG were disappointed to miss out on an opportunity to put themselves back among the league leaders at the weekend after they fell to a 4-2 home defeat at the hands of Kyleakin.

The home side lost an early goal in the scorching heat when a throw-in was taken quickly with no-one closing down the free man at the edge of the box.

His shot found a way through all the bodies and ended up in the back of the net.

Mallaig did manage to find a way back into the game through Andy Cunningham, who scored a terrific half-volley from the edge of the box to give the Lochaber side some life.

Better chances

The goal encouraged Mallaig to push forward and they had the better chances in the first half with Angus MacNaughton missing a great chance inside the box and an ambitious strike from Jamie MacGregor going narrowly wide.

Kyleakin took the lead again after half time only for Mallaig to strike back straight from the resulting centre. A long ball from Jamie MacGregor was beautifully taken down by Ross Douglas who, with his back to goal, twisted and turned to find an opening to put it back to 2-2.

Kyleakin would take the lead again after some poor defending from a corner led to a back post header being knocked right across goal to be finished at the front post.

Mallaig pushed to get back into the game but, with Douglas coming close again, Kyleakin would add another goal to make it 4-2 and secure all three points.

The scoreline could have easily been 5-2 if it had not been for the heroics of goalkeeper Mark Johnston who had a wonder save late in the game to deny Kyleakin a fifth.

Despite having the better of the first half, ultimately Mallaig paid the price for failing to take their chances, especially coming up against a clinical Kyleakin side.

Mallaig are looking to bounce back when they take on Portree Juniors in Portree next Saturday in a 6pm kick off.
