Enjoyable day at tag rugby festival

-

THE ANNUAL Oban and Lorn Primary tag rugby festival was organised by this year’s modern apprentice rugby coach Lucy Stewart.

Nearly 200 P4-7 pupils attended Glencruitten in Oban from Appin, Barcaldine, Dalmally, Dunbeg, Easdale, Lochnell, Rockfield and Taynuilt primary schools.

There were four pitches running on the day, two for P4/5 and two for P6/7. Each team played in the group stages and the top two teams from each pitch progressed through to the semi-finals. Once the semi-finals were played, the teams in the final were announced.

The P4/5 final was Taynuilt v Lochnell while the P6/7 final was Dunbeg v Rockfield.

The P4/5 final was refereed by Argyll and Bute rugby development officer Allan Wright. The match was of a high quality for such a young age and Taynuilt managed to push ahead to win 3-1.

The P6/7 final was refereed by Lucy Stewart. This one was tight as Rockfield scored the first try leaving Dunbeg to play catch-up. Each score that Rockfield made, Dunbeg scored to keep it even.

The match ended 5-4 to Rockfield while Dunbeg tried their best to get a score in the final play of the day but an accidental step into touch meant the final whistle went and Rockfield were the winners.

Oban Lorne Ladies captain Laura MacCormick and 1stXV captain Craig Wright came along for the trophy and medal presentation at the end of the day.

The Calcutta Cup was also on show on the day which allowed the players to find out some history of the trophy and get their photo taken with it.

Overall, it was an enjoyable day for all players involved. Many thanks went to all of the schools for their support over the season and for coming along to the festival.
