Glorious sunshine for Women’s Camanachd primary festival

-

AS the sun shone down on Lochaber, the Women’s Camanachd Association hosted its second National All Girls’ Primary Shinty Festival at Lochaber High School on Saturday.

The association was delighted to host 15 teams from as far afield as Aberdour and Skye, playing in three different categories: P1-3, P4-7 and P1-7.

The day was all about fun and getting the girls playing shinty and so, alongside the league games, there were ‘skills and drills’, with shooting, an obstacle course and a keepy-up competition for the girls to take part in.

A referee’s course was run by Katie Drain from the Camanachd Association earlier in the day and the newly qualified girls took charge of the games.

Although the day was focused around participation, there were several awards on offer; in the P1-3 section Portree came away with the ‘team of the day’ award and Lochaber’s Rosie Servant won the ‘girl of the festival’.

Ardnamurchan won the ‘team of the day’ award in the P4-7 section and Bethany MacIntosh from South Skye won the ‘girl of the festival’.

In the P1-7 section, Mallaig and District came out winners of the ‘team of the day’ and Nicola Duncan from Oban’s Park Primary School won the ‘girl of the festival’.

WCA president Lisa MacColl was delighted with the day and was very impressed by the skills on show from the young girls throughout the day.

Lisa thanked all the girls, coaches and volunteers for all their hard work in making today happen.

The ‘skills and drills’ winners were: Shooting competition - P1-3 - Olivia (Lochaber); P4/5 - Isla (Portree); P6/7 Orla (Mallaig and District).

Keepy-ups: P1-3 Leah (Portree); P4/5 Emma (Mallaig and District); P6/7 Ellie (Lochaber).

Obstacle course: P1-3 Brooke (Lochaber); P4/5 Katie (Portree); P6/7 Hannah (South Skye).
