Behind the scenes at Atlantis

-

THERE has been a lot going on this month with new equipment, loans to improve facilities and ongoing maintenance problems.

Disabled changing

Our newly refurbished disabled changing room is due to re-open any day now. Take a look when you’re next in as this has been designed to showcase what is to come once we have raised enough funds to replace the pool changing rooms. All the lockers in the pool changing rooms have now been repaired for the busy summer season.

New sports equipment

New goals have arrived for our back pitch, so all our young footballers are very pleased.

Four new table tennis tables have been donated by Table Tennis Scotland.

A new chilled water dispenser has been installed next to the squash courts so players can refill their bottles to cut down on plastic disposable bottles.

Green energy

To help with Atlantis’s sustainability, we have taken a further £38,000 interest-free loan from the Energy Saving Trust to replace our main quad pack water distribution system. This is essential to our operation and, at 22 years old, spares are no longer available. For the first time in 22 years, the centre will need to be closed from 12.30pm on Saturday June 16 (after swimming lessons) until Monday June 18 to install this equipment. We will re-open as normal Tuesday June 19 at 6.30am.

During this closure, we are also planning to complete other essential maintenance to minimise future disruption.

Our staff

We have a new duty manager, Sheila Lawson.

We are hosting a child protection course this month for swimming teachers and coaching staff to ensure they keep up with the latest guidelines.

And well done to Jack, our first male Les Mills Body Pump instructor. He is looking forward to seeing more guys taking part in group fitness classes at Atlantis.

Completed this month

Thanks to our loan from Resource Efficiency Scotland, the lighting in the spin studio, pool spectator area and all the corridors has now been changed to LED. We will continue over the next six weeks to replace all our lighting, saving a significant spend on electricity. Our tennis courts underwent their annual rejuvenation and are looking great.

Events

We have continued with our 25-year celebrations with lots of events in the past few months, including a family dodgeball competition and Muddy Atlantis Day assault course. The two events have raised more than £6,500 for our building improvements fund.
