Trio saddle up for 450-mile Highland cycle challenge

-

Three Lochaber cyclists are taking on the challenge of cycling 450 miles across the Highlands to raise funds for charity.

Along with eight other cyclists and a couple of helpers, Fort William hill runner Nick Sedgwick and local dentists Joanne Mackin and Christoff du Plessis will be riding across the Highlands and islands from July 2 to 7.

Every pound donated to the team will go to Tearfund, a UK Christian relief and development agency which works in 50 countries across the world, supporting people in poverty and providing disaster relief.

Nick said: ‘It’s great to be cycling up and down so many fantastic Highland hills again in aid of a very worthy cause and touching to see so many people across Lochaber, Scotland and even parts of England backing us and donating to Tearfund’s work.’

Nick completed a similarly brutal fundraising cycle tour in 2015. However, for Joanne and Christoff, this will be their first taste of charity cycle touring.

‘I am excited and nervous about the challenge that lies ahead,’ said Chris, ‘but the knowledge we’ve had so many donations will keep me going.’

With training well under way, the team is fairly confident of completing the six-day ride, although Joanne is a little more apprehensive.

‘We’re not as prepared as we’d like so it really will be a challenge,’ she added.
