MBE for Gaelic singer and teacher
An esteemed Gaelic singer and music teacher on Skye has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list 2018.
Christine Primrose has been honoured for services to Gaelic music, culture and education in Scotland and internationally and joins an illustrious list of influential names.
Growing up in Carloway, Lewis, Christine has been singing since she was a little girl and grew up immersed in traditional song. She first shot to fame in the traditional music world after winning a gold medal in sean-nós at the Royal National Mòd in 1974. She went on to com- plete a degree in traditional Gaelic music and performed all around the world, most regularly in North America, Australia, New Zealand and in Europe.
She won the Gaelic Singer of the Year at the Scottish Traditional Music Awards in 2009.
She has been working at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig since 1982, the year the school began to offer full-time courses. Since 1993 she has taught the Gaelic and Traditional Music (BA) course as well as short courses.
Sabhal Mòr Ostaig paid tribute to Christine, saying: ‘A massive congratulations to our own Christine Primrose on being awarded an MBE as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours list on Saturday for services to Gaelic Music to Culture and to Education in Scotland and Internationally.’
Christine continues to write, produce and perform music and released her latest album Gràdh is Gonadh – Guth ag Aithris, last year.
