‘Wild’ way to raise funds for rescuers

-

He’s performed on Top of the Pops, the Old Grey Whistle Test and at countless venues nationwide.

But on a sunny bank holiday in May, the Godfather of Grunge Folk – Wild Willy Barrett, and composer, cellist and vocalist Mary Holland (aka Mrs Wild Willy), performed in the smallest of venues – the front room of a Hertfordshire home!

Combining their creativity, charm and charisma, a fun-packed evening of music unfolded, dedicated to raising funds for Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team (LMRT).

Banjo, fiddle, guitar, cello and even an uncooked raw egg were all part of the superb Sunday show, which not only proved to be an intimate night to remember, but raised £450 for the Lochaber rescuers.

It was the second front room gig that has been arranged by the family of Ian Bell, who died on Ben Nevis in August 2015.

‘Watching Wild Willy “egg neck” and hear Mary’s stirring cello was a sight and sound to remember for the lucky 30 people who tucked themselves into the front room,’ said Julia Bell who organised the event.

‘It was such a rare treat to have Willy and Mary give their time to this cosy fundraising initiative.’

In 2017, Mary played cello and provided vocals to a stirring song composed by Julia to remember Ian. The CD was recorded and made available to family and friends.

The Bell family also raised money for LMRT last year when they held ‘IanFest’ – a mini festival – in their back garden.

‘Another IanFest will take place in August,’ said Julia. ‘We will continue to remember Ian and the dedicated work of LMRT.’

The Bell family thanks friends and family for continuing to support their fundraisers with donations and music.

‘We appreciate this support and all donations big and small, edible and musical. I want to thank everyone and an extra thanks to jewellery designers Cambery Designs for boosting this fundraiser with their generous donation,’ added Julia.
