Saturday August 18

High Silver Walk, Acharacle

A ridge walk with fine views of Castle Tioram and Loch Ailort. A good place for wild life.

The walk starts at Blain, NM676694, about 1km N of Acharacle. Limited parking is available. Follow a track N for a short way, then head NW up to the ridge of Beinn Gheur.

Descend steeply to a small dam and then climb N again to the ridge which continues to Cruach nam Meann 207m. Traverse the hillside SE to an unnamed lochan and continue E to join a path which is followed N to Loch Moidart. On joining the coastal path (Silver Walk), turn W and continue to Castle Tioram.

Return S on the public road, forking right to follow the estate road along the shore of Loch Moidart and the estuary of the River Shiel to the W of Torr. Re-join the public road and follow it back to Blain.

Grade: M; distance: 11kms; height to climb: 287m.

Thursday August 23 Lochan na h-Earba, Glen Spean A circuit below the craggy hill Binnein Shuas, mainly on good tracks and by the shores of Lochan na h-Earba and Loch Laggan.

Park at Moy Bridge at NN432830. Cross S over the bridge and follow the track SE for 1.5kms to a junction. Turn sharp right, heading S at first, and follow the track for 2.5kms to the head of Lochan na h-Earba. Continue NE on the track along shore. Cross the river dividing the two sections of the loch at a small dam at NN484 737.

Turn W over rough ground, climbing gently about 30ms to the broad col between Binnein Shuas and Binnein Shios. Continue W, maintainin­g alt 380m to reach a level spur at NN466839. Turn NW and descend to the track along the shore of Loch Laggan. Turn SW and follow the track to the junction on the outward route and return to the start.

Grade: L; distance: 16kms; height to climb: 270m. Meet at Fort William Woollen Mill at 9.20am. Start of walk 10am. Leader: Helen Critchley 01397 712346 or 07789 253701.

Sunday August 19

Meall Corranaich, Meall a’Coire Leith, Loch Tay.

Start at the parking and picnic site at the westward end of the Ben Lawers ridge.

The start at almost 550m makes this a short round but the terrain is rough. Park at NN593416 (near large cairn) or at car park further on.

Take path NE for about 0.5kms then turn SE following a line of fence posts to reach the SW ridge of Meall Corranaich. Follow this to the summit. Head north from the summit over a second minor summit and head NNE to the bealach and on to Meall a Choire Leith. Descend SW back to the cars.

Distance: 10kms; height to climb: 750ms.
