Plenty of laughs at fun-filled Knoydart Games
Labelled an ‘alternative’ Highland Games by its organisers, the Knoydart Games focuses more on silly games and good laughs than caber tossing and Highland flings.
The annual games day is always a great family day out and this year was no different, with plenty of activities, races and music to keep both the children and adults entertained.
A cloudy but generally dry day allowed all visitors and participants to make the most of the outdoor activities and lounge on the grass enjoying the day against the picturesque backdrop of Loch Nevis.
The tug o’ war took centre stage again this year, which resulted in two Knoydart teams fighting it out for this year’s trophy.
The dog show was once again one of the most popular events of the day, attracting 27 participants. Entrants were put through their paces in the agility classes, as well as the more fun events, including ‘best six legs’, which prompted some great catwalk struts.
As always, the youngsters had the run of the games with plenty of races and activities to keep them entertained. However, the water slide, intended for the children, ended up as an adult’s play park by the end of the day.
Delicious food was served up in the form of a pig-on-a-spit, as well as a burger barbecue, while the community bar at Knoydart Community Hall kept the drinks flowing and everyone in good spirits. As well as lots of visitors staying on Knoydart for the weekend, friends from Mallaig and nearby areas also joined in the fun.
The day concluded with the raft race, which saw the youngest participant, Victor Elvis Stockwell, and his race partner Freya Holroyd take the trophy against the Viking Tribe, who were just as surprised as the spectators that their bath raft did not sink. As the afternoon activities drew to a close and after a quick tidy up and change over, the evening entertainment got under way.
The Rowan Leslie Band, with local guest musician Galen Brook, kept the crowd dancing until the wee small hours with a fantastic ceilidh.
Stephanie Harris of Visit Knoydart said: ‘The Knoydart community are extremely thankful to all the volunteers who helped put the day together, as well as all the attendees who took part and donated generously.’
