Mixed week of results for Mallaig

-

Following their loss in the Ross Cup final the previous week, Mallaig were looking to bounce back with a victory against William Wilson League toppers Kyleakin on Saturday August 4.

However, the Lochaber side were unable to make the most of the opportunity to enhance their title credentials after they narrowly lost out to a controversial winning goal.

Mallaig led through captain Jaimie Young who finished well from a half volley from a corner to give the visitors a lead going into half time. Unfortunately, like many times this season, Mallaig didn’t start well in the second half and the performance dipped losing two goals. Kyleakin’s first was an excellent finish, worthy of winning any match. However, their second was marred with controversy as Mallaig players claimed a hand ball in the run up to the goal gave the opposing striker an advantage.

In a disappointing end to the game, Mallaig were reduced to 10 men for dissent. Kyleakin’s know-how and ability to get the job done meant they still lead the title race. Mallaig bounced back well from their defeat to Kyleakin with an emphatic victory on Wednesday August 8 against a poor Kyle side.

A hat-trick from Andy Cunningham and braces from Andrew Sneddon, Neil Cameron and Ryan MacDonald eased the Lochaber club to victory. Sean Powrie and Gordy Jamieson also got their name on the scoresheet. The Lochaber side left it late to secure victory over William Wilson league rivals North West Skye on Saturday August 11. Goals from Andy Cunningham and Angus MacNaughton meant the scores were level heading into the final few minutes but Marc Maclean scored deep into injury time to ensure all three points went to Mallaig.

After a busy week for the club, a title challenge remains well within their grasp as they sit fourth in the league.

They have a game in hand over table toppers Portree Juniors, who are four points ahead.
