Mystery boxes spread kindness in Oban

- By David McPhee dmcphee@obantimes.co.uk

People in Oban have been receiving mystery boxes filled with trinkets with the aim of spreading kindness in the area.

The packages are filled with a bracelet, a chocolate love heart, a badge, and a note which reads: ‘The right way to change the world is by doing one act of random kindness at a time #acts of kind n es so ban .’

An anonymous social media page was also set up to encourage others to carry out their own acts of kindness.

The administrator of the account told The Oban Times: ‘I set this project up because I could see so many instances of people just needing a wee pick-meup, a smile, a hug or just a compliment.

‘I realised that something so small could have a massive impact on a person’s well-being and that I could start something that could grow, meaning more and more people could feel some appreciation.

‘I sent out 30 wee boxes and hid some around town hoping to reach people who would enjoy the sentiment, but would also carry it on.

‘I hope that this will grow and reach people in need, spread a little love and kindness.

‘Oban is a small town and we are extremely fortunate to have such an amazing place to live, but it’s so important to have support and kindness in our community.

‘If anyone received an act of kindness or wants to send or do their own, they could tag the page and others can see the positive impact I hope is achieved.’

Dozens of people who received a box have taken to social media to thank the mystery sender.

Speaking about the impact the project has had, the creator said: ‘[It has been] all positive, some people said that it had been a wee pickme-up and some said it came at the right moment that they needed.’
