John MacEachan Memorial Trophy
The first John MacEachan Memorial Trophy golf day took place at Glencruitten Golf Club last Saturday when 38 teams of four took part in two shotgun starts.
John, who died in February, was a former captain of the club and an enthusiastic golfer. In his younger days John played shinty for Oban Celtic, football for Oban Saints and rugby for Oban Lorne and was instrumental in getting the rugby clubhouse built.
Winners of the competition were Willie MacAdam, Duncan Forgrieve, James Scott Snr and Donnie MacGill with Phillip Murphy, Steven Murphy, James Muir and Neil Carmichael runners-up.
Additional prizewinners were John Plunkett, nearest the pin at the 15th, the longest drive was won by Gavin Owens and hitting the longest drive sign in three shots was ‘Pele’ MacCallum.
A prize of £1,000 was on offer for a hole in one at the fifth but unfortunately this wasn’t won.
As well as Oban teams, a number of Argyll teams took part including the Kintyre Tractormen and the Dalmally Wallies.
To keep the participants refreshed there was a G on the Tee bar at the 6th.
Entertainment was provided by Tom Adams, Hector MacFadyen and Grant MacCall ably assisted by crooners Peter MacCuish Snr, Sandy Gow and Dugald MacLean.
A special thanks goes to David and Kathleen Lafferty, the main sponsors of the event, as well as local businesses and individuals who contributed to a very successful raffle. Thanks also went to Glencruitten Golf Club, course and bar staff and MC Neil Armour.
The MacEachan family would like to thank all the golfers and supporters who bought raffle tickets and helped to make this a very successful money-raising event. More than £5,000 was raised for local cancer charities.
An enjoyable day was had by everyone and it was announced that the John MacEachan Memorial Trophy would be an annual event.
