An interestin­g visit by passenger ferry from Port Appin to this well-known island in Loch Linnhe.

12 th century castle ruins, the much earlier Tirefour Broch and many other antiquitie­s.

Start from the ferry slip at the N end of Lismore, NM894461. Head SW along the coast at first, following the B8045 for 3Km to a junction at NM871441. Turn S on to a minor road, past Baileouchd­arach and divert SW on to a short path to visit the well and chapel ruins of Tobar na Slainte, NM871433. Return to the road and continue SW for 700m. Leave the road again, heading SE to the Broch site at Tirefour Castle, NM867429.

Follow the coast SW over rough ground to reach a minor road at Balnagown, then follow it N to regain the B8045. Follow this NE for 800m to Clach and look for the remains of St Moluag’s Cathedral at NM860435, just W of Lismore Parish Church. Return SW along the B8045 for 150m to find a track leading W then N to the NW coast of the island and Castle Coeffin. Follow the coast NE over rough ground and below the crags of Creag Sgeanach to Port na Moralachd. Disused lime kilns may be found here. When past the steep ground, turn E inland, curving NE to reach a track at Fennachroc­han. Follow the track to Port Ramsay, then the coast around the NE tip of the island to the ferry slip.

A Munro with superb views which will be undertaken at a moderate pace for those not used to walking on the hillier hills. Expect it to take 6-7 hours with lots of stops to catch your breath.

Start from the layby on the west side of the A82 at NN356280, opposite the turning for Kirkton Farm. Cross the road and follow the track to the farm, joining the WHW and turning left in front of the buildings. Go through a gate, leave the WHW and head N up a track to cross the railway at a level crossing. Turn NE and follow the edge of the forested area, over a style into the plantation then over another style to emerge on to the open hillside.

Continue NE up to the S top at 997m LR alt. A line of fence posts may be followed for much of the way. Descend steeply W at first to gain the true crest of the ridge at the head of a narrow defile. Follow the ridge down N to the col and continue N up to the summit of Beinn Challuim, 1025m. Return by outward route.

Chno Dearg, Stob Coire Sgriodain, Corrour Train from Fort William departs 7.44am, arrives Corrour 8.32am.

Follow path on W side of railway to bridge at NN342681. Head up NNW onto ridge of Sron na Garbh-bheinne. Continue NE up broad ridge over summit of Garbh-bheinn and on to summit of Meall Garbh. Head N then NE to summit of Chno Dearg. Return to last col. Now head WSW to lower col before heading WNW over 924m and 958m summits before turning N to summit of Stob Coire Sgriodain. Head roughly N back towards Fersit. Go over second crag named Sron na Garbh-bheinne with care, or avoid by dropping E into corrie and follow Allt Chaorach Beag. Descend to track through Fersit to cars left near road edge at NN358758.
