Busy weekend for Oban hockey players

-

Oban Hockey Club’s men’s team travelled to Glasgow at the weekend for their first encounter with Western Wildcats.

Despite the Glasgow side having much of the possession in the first 20 minutes, Oban soon found their form and played a strong first half, going up 2-0 at half time with goals from Ali Burton and Andy Hodge. Wildcats got a goal back after the break, but Stuart Head slotted the ball home soon after to take the lead to 3-1. Wildcats kept up sustained attacking play and ultimately came out on top in the second half with the game ending 3-3 at the final whistle. Man of the match was Jensen Binnie, who did a sterling job at right back putting in plenty of decent tackles and getting the ball away from dangerous areas on multiple occasions. To take a point away from home against a strong, well drilled side was a top effort from the team.

Oban Hockey Club also had a competitive mixed game on Sunday against Mull. This was the first game of the new Western mixed league and it got under way with a goal from Andy Hodge.

Mull proved they were capable of winning and brought the score back to 2-1. In the second half, Oban refused to lie down and goals from Alistair Burton and Stuart Head saw the final score 3-2 to Oban. Mention must be made of Arden Binnie who put in an excellent performance in the midfield.

Anyone interested in trying hockey, young or old, male or female is invited to junior training on Thursday nights from 5pm to 6pm with adult training following at 6.30pm till 8pm at the Oban High School astro pitch.
