Lochaber slip to fourth place after hammering by Cowal

-

This was always going to be a tough encounter for Lochaber, with Cowal playing their first home match after a run of three away wins, and so it proved.

It was the team in second spot on the table versus third in round six of Tennent’s West Division 3 on Saturday.

Lochaber were unable to get a full squad for the away trip, once again struggling for numbers when travelling.

Cowal started strongly and full of confidence and it wasn’t long before their hard straight running got them across the try line.

From then on Cowal kept the scoreboard ticking over making the most of the space out wide.

Lochaber finally got some possession and caused Cowal’s defence problems. They worked a try scoring opportunity when prop Sam Kane picked the ball from the back of the ruck.

He got the ball over the try line but was unable to get it down with three defenders making the tackle.

The only joy Lochaber were getting was at scrum time, where the visitors’ scrum was dominating every encounter.

The visitors’ pack also included two young players who have come through the youth system - Chris Morrison playing his first full game at hooker and John Clark making his first senior appearance at flanker.

Jonathan McCook got Lochaber’s only points of the game with a penalty kick.

Cowal won the game comfortably 61-3 and the loss leaves Lochaber in fourth place in the league, two points behind third-placed Glasgow University Medics.

Lochaber will look to get back to winning ways this Saturday when they host Shawlands at Banavie. Kick off 3pm.
