Connel electrician is first winners of industry award
Connel electrical contractor Kenneth Ferguson has become the first winner of a new accolade awarded at a ceremony hosted by SELECT, Scotland’s largest trade association.
The campaigning body for the electrotechnical sector in Scotland chose the small company set up near Oban just over a decade ago as the inaugural winner in the new Best Mediumsized Contractor category.
The latest award opportunity was hotly contested by those of the 1,250 SELECT members whose turnover is in the range of £250,000 to £1 million.
Kenneth Ferguson Electrical Contractor was established in 2006 and has carved out a substantial business in the Oban area providing domestic, commercial and industrial services.
‘We had a fantastic night. It’s good for a small business in Argyll to be recognised. It’s great for Oban and Connel,’ said Mr Ferguson, who took his team, including apprentices, to the awards ceremony.
Darrell Matthews, SELECT managing director said: ‘SELECT member companies come in all sizes, from small local enterprises to national and multinational groups. We wanted to recognise with this award the important role played by mid-size firms.
‘Especially in non-metropolitan areas, medium-sized companies can be significant employers and Kenneth Ferguson Electrical Contractor has built a substantial and growing presence in its local area.
‘It undertakes a whole host of work, including renewable installations and the company is beginning to explore other aspects of growing markets, including the installation of electrical vehicle charging points.’
The award was presented by Dylan Mansfield, of award sponsor Whitecroft Lighting, at a gathering at the Radisson Blu in the centre of Glasgow on October 12.
One of Scotland’s most popular radio and television personalities, Shereen Nanjiani, hosted the event, which was attended by a wide range of companies, from major electrical enterprises to local firms, illustrating the diversity and strength of Scotland’s electrical sector.
Kenneth Ferguson Electrical Contractor, which became an Approved Certifier of Construction in 2008, operates in a number of fields, including, domestic and commercial installation, solar PV installations and testing.
Alan Wilson, head of membership and communications at SELECT, said: ‘In this first year of the new Best Medium-sized Contractor, Kenneth Ferguson Electrical Contractor has been a very worthy winner.’
