Sharon’s on the job snooze aids fundraiser
Sleeping on the job may not usually be encouraged in the workplace but one Fort William shop manager has managed to raise some funds for charity by doing just that.
Sharon Smith, manager at Cancer Research UK on Fort William’s High Street, spent last Thursday night sleeping in the shop as part of the Stand Up to Cancer campaign.
After closing up the shop and being read some bedtime stories by her colleagues, Sharon tucked herself in to her makeshift bed in among the shop’s shelves and hangers, ready for a good night’s sleep.
Twelve hours later she awoke and was on hand immediately to open the shop for another day of business.
‘I worked until 8pm and then did the sleepover all night,’ Sharon explained. ‘I think I spent 26 hours in the shop in total, having worked during the day on Thursday and then spending the night there.’
Sharon’s fundraising sleepover has helped raise £150, with donations still coming into the shop every day, and, with the shop staying open until 8pm, she made an extra £100 in sales on Thursday evening.
‘I heard about someone else doing this sleepover challenge and thought it would be a great way to raise awareness. I like to do something different every year for Stand Up to Cancer and just decided to go for this.’
Sharon was fully prepared for the chilly night she had ahead of her and brought extra woolly jumpers and socks to make the sleepover that bit more comfortable.
The team at the Cancer Research shop will be continuing to raise funds for Stand Up to Cancer until the end of October. To support Sharon and the team, visit the shop on the High Street to donate.
