Behind the scenes at Atlantis

-

It’s been another busy month at Atlantis. Here are some highlights:

Improvements

After millions of footsteps, our faithful 20-year-old carpet in the entrance, reception and soft play area has been replaced.

What a lift this gives the centre. We’re so excited to see some of our long-talked about improvements finally being done. Come and check out the cool new colouring and modern new look.

Another highlight was finishing off paint work in the pool spectator area following water damage.

Climb cube

We have completed our quarterly reset of all the routes.

We’ve got 20 new routes to choose from, between beginner and advanced climber. Thanks to Michael Bleazard, from Glasgow Climbing Centre, for his guidance and help with the reset.

The carpet in the climbing area will also be replaced soon.

Staff

Better qualified staff means better service for you.

Our continued partnership with the Social Enterprise Academy has again enormously benefitted our staff this month.

Three of the team had a great time at an academy leadership course earlier in the month. This was a oneday introductory session which will lead to further sessions to improve their skills. We’re so fortunate to have a resource like the academy. Its input and experience has a direct, immediate benefit to Atlantis and everyone who works and uses the centre.

Swim teacher

We organised a UKCC Level One Teaching Aquatics course over two weekends in September. The course had eight participants from Oban and two from Lochaber. We recognise the importance in making sure regular courses are held in the area to support the vital skill of teaching people to swim.

Atlantis Leisure runs Oban Swim School, which teaches 500 children to swim each week.

The swim school also allows the children to participate in their rookie lifesaving awards which allows children to learn the fundamentals with an adult they know and trust. We also have a friendly adult swimming session on a Monday evening. This caters for all adults – from those who might have a fear of the water to those who just wish to perfect their technique.

Events

We are again teaming up with Hope2Oban to host a LockIn overnight tomorrow, Friday October 26.

This is a fun event that sees Atlantis turned into a giant youth club throughout the night for S1 children from Oban High School.
