Oban and Dunbeg are set for bonfire night

This year’s Oban fireworks display will be one of the best arrays in years, according to BID4Oban.

The first 500 visitors to Station Square will receive an eco cup, made from organic bamboo fibre, courtesy of Scottish Sea Farms.

The event will commence at 7.30pm on Monday November 5, with the best views being from Oban town centre and North Pier, as well as the Esplanade.

This year will be particularly striking thanks to a £6,000 grant from the Scottish Sea Farms’ Heart of the Community Initiative.

Andrew Spence, from BID4Oban, said: ‘Last year’s event was very well attended with many people choosing to come along early to get the best spots for viewing. Having a public display brings the community together on a cold November night and enables them to view the fireworks in a safe manner.’

In addition to the fireworks display, there will also be food stalls at Station Square, as well as a Scottish Sea Farms information point, where spectators can collect their free eco cup.

Meanwhile, on Saturday November 3, hundreds of people will make their way to Dunbeg for the village’s annual bonfire and fireworks display.

Proceeds from this year’s event will go to three-yearold Harris McGougan, who has leukemia.

Event organiser James MacDonald said: ‘His family have had a nightmare so this year Dunbeg is going to give them a night to remember.’

The bonfire will be lit at 7.30pm on Saturday November 3 at the Lochnell Road car park – next to the start of the cycle path.

Everything is in place and the Rotary Club of Oban has already donated £500.

There will be a raffle and an auction on the night, which includes prizes such as a builder for the day, a plasterer for the day, as well as a tour of Ibrox for four people.

The event will also feature burger and bottle stalls.

‘It’s all going good,’ James added. ‘I am really looking forward to it, especially for wee Harris.’

James revealed there would be a few surprises on the night.
