The Lochaber Local History Society welcomes its own Bill Cameron, a well kent teacher and polymath from Inverlochy, to speak to his title of The Plaque above the Door.

Bill will present an illustrate­d history of a family plaque which stood above the door to Nether Lochaber Stores in Onich for more than 135 years.

The talk, at the Ben Nevis Hotel, Thursday November 1 at 8pm, will include royal connection­s, the creation of a new clan tartan, some history of Old Onich and an unlikely connection with San Francisco.

Friends of Nevis holds its AGM on Friday November 2 at Glen Nevis Restaurant at 6.30pm. The short meeting will be followed by a talk from a John Muir Trust representa­tive. Everyone is welcome. Numbers in advance if possible to Rory at info@friendsofn­evis.co.uk

Representa­tives of Lochaber Sensory Care for sight and hearing support will visit Mallaig Medical Centre between 1.30pm and 3pm on Tuesday November 6. The Caol-based team of staff and volunteers will offer help and advice to those with a sight or hearing impairment. They will also re-tube and maintain NHS hearing aids and supply NHS batteries for these. Appointmen­ts are not required for this free service.

Fort William Accordion and Fiddle Club is holding a musical evening on Tuesday November 6 at 7.30pm at the Railway Club in Inverlochy. The guest artist is the Michael Garvin Band. Everyone is welcome.

The AGM of the Nevis Landscape Partnershi­p will be held at Voluntary Action Lochaber, An Drochaid, Fort William on Tuesday November 13 at 5.30pm.

The Kilmallie Christmas lights switch-on takes place on November 16 at 7pm at Kilmallie Community Centre, Corpach.

Friends of Nevis invites anyone to join the Glen Nevis autumn litter pick and curling pond tidy up on Sunday November 18 from 10.30am–3.30pm. Meet at the Ben Nevis Highland Centre (Woollen Mill) at 10.30am. All safety and litter picking equipment provided, together with refreshmen­ts and lunch. Under-18s must be accompanie­d by an adult family member, and sturdy footwear and waterproof­s are advisable. Come for a couple of hours or more. Lochaber Athletic Club’s AGM will take place on Sunday November 18, 7.30pm at Lochaber Yacht Club, Fort William. This is a good opportunit­y to discuss the ‘running’ of the club, raise ideas and make suggestion­s.
