Jags make light work of Colquhoun in Thomson Trophy tie

Colquhoun United South Lochaber Thistle 2 2 Bobby Thomson Memorial Trophy

South Lochaber Thistle powered into the quarter final of the Bobby Thomson Memorial Trophy with a resounding win over Division 3 side Colquhoun United.

As fixtures were scrapped in the central belt due to heavy rain and wind warnings, the Jags made the trip to Bearsden looking to build on their positive start to the season in which they remain unbeaten in the league and have progressed to the next round in two cups.

The home side started the brighter and took the lead after eight minutes after a defensive slip. However, Thistle were not to be daunted. The Jags found their rhythm and the equalising goal came when manager Alan Gray – making his first start of the season – played a high ball over the top. Stalwart striker Danny Mackintosh’s first touch bamboozled the defence before he buried the ball with aplomb, leveling the scores after 32 minutes.

SLT continued to press and got their reward before the half time whistle. A cunning free kick from David Forbes was passed outside the wall and club captain Martin Munro cut in and popped it into the far bottom corner.

Still more was to come for the away side as they powered to the mid-point of the match. Impish winger and penalty specialist Sean Noble took a poor touch but it landed nicely for Mackintosh to score his second. And his hat trick arrived in the 44th minute when a clinical volley from a corner which flew into the far bottom corner of the net.

The Jags refused to let up as the second half progressed. First the ball dropped invitingly just outside the penalty area to left back Barna Tot who rifled his shot into the net before Mackintosh netted his fourth goal of the afternoon to take the score to 6-1.

Although Colquhoun were able to nick a second goal, the last finish of the game came from Forbes who scored a lung busting finish to leave the final tally at 7-2.

The next match for South Lochaber Thistle sees a return to league action with another away trip, this time to Garscube to take on Westerlands G.G AFC who are level on points with SLT in what should be a close contest.
