Oban – On Tuesday October 30, United Auctions held their annual breeding cattle sale at Oban Livestock Centre when 338 head were sold. Quality and well-bred sorts were keenly bid for whilst plainer sorts proved harder to cash. A large following of buying clientele was in attendance from throughout the country. Stirling – On October 27, the Luing Cattle Society held their 45th autumn sale at United Auctions, Stirling. Shona and Kenny Marshall, Concraig, Aberdeen were the judges. The results were as follows. Sim-Luing in-calf heifers: 1st Colin Little, East Bracklinn 2nd Robert McNee Ltd, Benhar.

Luing bulling heifers: 1st Robert McNee Ltd, Benhar 2nd Torwoodlee and Buckholm Estate, Buckholm. Sim-Luing bulling heifers: 1st John Lawrie (Tillyrie) Ltd, Tillyrie 2nd Messrs Finlay McGowan, Dirnanean. Golden Jubilee Cup for best overall pair of heifers: Robert McNee Ltd, Benhar. Luing bulling heifers averaged £1,496 for 113 forward, with a top of 2,200gns for a pen of 4 heifers from C. C MacArthur and Co, Nunnerie sold to Pat Wilson Farms, Loanleven. This gave Nunnerie herd an average of £1,827 for 29 sold, W Graham and Son, Craigdarro­ch sold 14 to average £1,905, Robert McNee Ltd, Benhar sold 8 to average £1,811, B Renwick, Blackhouse sold 18 to average £1,727, Mr JS Wotherspoo­n, (per A Slater) Glenlyon sold 5 to average £1,428 and J, J and R Cameron, Monzie sold 8 to average £1,208.

Luing calves average £642 for 9 with a top of 680gns for a pair from N Horsfall, Rannoch sold to P Simpson, Troutbeck, Windermere.

25 Sim-Luing in calf heifers followed averaging £2,058 topping at 2,400gns for a pair from Robert McNee Ltd, Benhar going to M Linkleter, West Farm, Kirkheaton.This gave Benhar herd an average of £2,148 for 13 sold and C Little, East Bracklinn and average of £1,960 for 12 sold. Sim-Luing bulling heifers averaged £1,229 for 57. Top price of 1,500gns came from Mrs C M Reid, (per S Little) Portmore who sold 9 to average £1,458, John Lawrie (Tillyrie) Ltd sold 7 heifers averaging £1,320, D and A Barr, Milkieston sold 8 to average £1,319, Messrs F McGowan, Dirnanean sold 13 to average £1,195 and W Girvan, Berryfell sold 15 to average £1,134.
