Young Nevis dancers put on showstopper
Nevis Highland Dancing Association hosted its annual Highland Dancing Festival in Fort William recently, with dancers from across the country competing in almost a dozen competitions.
Dancers from as far afield as Edinburgh, Fife and the Western Isles joined their West Highland counterparts at Lochaber High School on Saturday October 20.
Highland Dancing had all but disappeared in the Lochaber area but following a big effort from the area’s aficionados, classes were re-established in Fort William 10 years ago. Since then, the association has grown and now has a branch in Arisaig.
The association established the annual competition several years ago to encourage the young dancers to hone their skills and strive to improve their standards.
This year’s festival saw some strong performances from the Lochaber dancers across the different classes.
Most notably, Cailean Jennett from Appin took first place overall in the beginner nine years and over, followed closely by Codie Laverty of Fort William.
Rhian Daly, Fort William, finished in second place overall in the novice 11 years and over and Appin’s Eva MacColl took top spot in the premier 13 years.
