Join us for a brilliant evening of inspiration from Michael ‘Eddie the Eagle’ Edwards, one of the UK’s most wellknown and best-loved Olympians. Find out more about the man behind the ski mask and the legend that is ‘Eddie the Eagle’! Michael will give a motivational talk based on his incredible experience of fighting to compete in the Calgary Winter Olympics 1988 as the UK’s unlikely ski-jumper. The UK hadn’t entered a competitor into ski jumping for 60 years, but where there’s a will there’s a way, and Michael earned the right to compete in the Winter Olympics against all the odds...and the wishes of the winter sports establishment. Eddie first represented Great Britain at the 1987 World Championships and was ranked 55th in the world. This performance qualified him, as the sole British applicant, for the 1988 Winter Olympics. He may not have won (he came last) but he became the stand-out star of the competition and a worldwide audience took him to their hearts because of his tenacity, bravery, positive attitude and good humour. At the closing ceremony, the President of the Olympic Organising Committee singled him out for his contribution to the event, saying, “At these Games, some competitors have won gold, some have broken records and some you have even soared like an eagle.” His amazing story has gone on to inspire a whole new generation since the 2016 release of the smash-hit feelgood comedy, Eddie the Eagle film starring Taron Egerton and Hugh Jackman. Whether you remember him well or he’s someone you’ve only seen in the film, come along to this great family-friendly event to hear his inspirational true story of persevering against the odds to achieve his goal.
