Praise be for Oban Winter Festival
Choirs, candles and a big quiz are among a series of winter praise events being lined up by Oban churches.
The events are all part of this year’s Oban
Winter Festival starting from tomorrow,
Friday November 16.
Lorn Chorus will be at St John’s Cathedral in George Street from 7.30pm to present A Little Light Music raising funds to be shared between the cathedral and Marie Curie cancer charity. Admission is by donation with tea, coffee, cakes and chat to end the night.
Everyone is welcome to join in a pop-up art workshop at the cathedral on Saturday November 17 from 10.30am to 12.30pm turning recycled beach glass into a Celtic cross that will go on display outside until the end of the festival on Sunday November 25.
Monday November 19 sees an evening of winter food and praise at St John’s Cathedral again, organised by Hope2Oban and local churches. There will be a mix of some old favourites and contemporary songs as well as other musical performances and prose. Food will be served from 6.30pm with music starting at 7.30pm. Entry is by donation.
Provost of St John’s, the Rev Margi Campbell said: ‘I am delighted to welcome everyone to the activities and musical events happening at St John’s Cathedral during the winter festival, especially to the exciting new venture of Winter Praise.
‘Come for food from 6.30pm and songs and performances from 7.30pm as we look to brighten the darkness of our winter nights. Led by some wonderfully talented folk from in and around our area, it promises to be an incredible evening.’
Back by popular demand in atmospheric St John’s is a Choirs and Candles night on Friday November 23 featuring Oban Gaelic Choir, Taynuilt Gaelic Choir, Bach Choir, Lorn Chorus and others from 7.30pm.
Oban Congregational Church has a coffee morning and Christmas fair on Saturday November 24 from 10.30am to 3.30pm in Argyll Street.
Glencruitten Church Hall is also hosting a Macmillan coffee morning on November 24 from 10am to noon raffling off a big hamper. Later at the hall, Marek Kochmanski will be giving a piano recital. Doors open at 6.45pm ready for the performance at 7pm. Tickets on the door are £10, children can get in free.
