Celtic’s Boxing Day challenge

-

The Oban Celtic annual Boxing Day challenge match between the over 35s and the under 35s took place on a perfect Mossfield pitch despite the rain.

This annual event is played in memory of former players Vince Carnie and Jamie Pearson.

The match started at a brisk pace with chances being missed at both ends and both goalkeepers having to look lively to keep their goals intact.

The half time whistle came with the youngsters leading 3-1 thanks to goals from Daniel MacMillan, Ross MacMillan and Dylan Cook. Kenny Wotherspoon was on target for the old heads.

In the second half the youngsters went further ahead with a fine strike from Andy MacDonald.

This seemed to spark the elder statesmen into action with Kenny Wotherspoon netting his second goal of the game and a further strike from Scott Burnett made the score 4-3. Try as they might the old guard could not get an equaliser so the match ended in a narrow win for the youngsters.

The players and club officials then retired to the Masonic Lodge where youngsters’ captain Andy MacDonald was presented with the Carnie and Pearson Trophy by the two families.

The club’s senior player of the year was Ross MacMillan with Scott Mossman named under 17 player of the year.

The club would like to thank the people who provided the food and teas at the match and the Masonic Lodge for use of the facilities for the evening entertainment.
