Such a moving tribute to Iolaire
There was a prolonged build-up to the centenary commemorations to mark the appalling tragedy that was the sinking of the troop-carrying yacht Iolaire on New Year’s Day in 1919.
As has been very well documented over recent months, more than 200 lives were lost when the vessel foundered on the rocks known as the Beasts of Holm, just yards from the Stornoway coastline.
Dignitaries, including His Royal Highness Princes Charles and Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, joined hundreds of local people, many of them the descendants of victims, as well as visitors from further afield for the poignant and moving service held at the Iolaire memorial.
It was a fitting tribute to the men who died in that awful disaster.
