WHAT’S ON in Lochaber
A bottle stall fundraiser is being held on Saturday February 23 in Caol Co-op at 11am to raise money for Chloe Purvis and her family. The event is being organised by Liz MacMillan, who is still accepting donations. Liz can be contacted through her Facebook page.
Bravehound/McOpera presents Mozart Requiem at 5pm on Sunday February 24 in St Mary’s Church, Arisaig. The next meeting of the Fort William Photographic Society is on Tuesday February 26 at 7pm in the Salvation Army hall. Bring photographs to discuss, improve and analyse, or any camera queries. Nonmembers welcome.
The March meeting of the Lochaber Local History Society will see Ken Johnston speak on the story of the striking new building at the entrance to the town in a presentation called The Rise, Fall and Rise Again of a Highland School.
Now resurrected from its ruinous state, pictured above, Ken will tell the story from its design by Alexander Ross in 1872, its headmasters and pupils through to its rebuilding as the new local Highland Council headquarters, including its last-minute rescue from demolition some years ago.
As Lochaber’s planning officer at the time, Ken will tell this story for the first time. Come and learn more at 8pm on Thursday March 7 at the Ben Nevis Hotel. Everyone is welcome.
A fundraising ceilidh and raffle will be held in Ballachulish Village Hall on April 6 in aid of the Barking Mad Dog Rescue charity which saves dogs from the streets and ‘kill’ shelters in Romania and then finds them good homes in the UK.
