Mull student turns teacher

- By Sam Ormiston editor@obantimes.co.uk

A Mull student has impressed his teachers and peers after gaining the status of Level 1 Google Certified Educator.

Jakub Marzec, a third-year pupil at Tobermory High School, is the first Argyll and Bute student to gain the industry recognised qualification, which is actually aimed at teaching staff.

The qualification, which can be worked towards and gained on Google’s Teacher Centre, is used to certify educators who know how to use Google tools in the classroom.

Jakub is one of many pupils at his school who had been using Google’s G Suite to develop their digital skills.

The Google Educator programme, which he has been using, was originally designed to help teachers use Google for Education to improve

standards of teaching and learning.

In gaining the Educator status, Jakub has demonstrated that he has the knowledge and ability to do this.

Councillor Yvonne McNeilly, Argyll and Bute Council’s policy lead for education, praised Jakub on his success, remarking that his achievement was ‘fantastic for Jakub and for Tobermory’.

The council has seen a huge increase in young people taking up an active interest in technology. Councillor McNeilly added: ‘Our schools are working extremely

hard to give young people the opportunity to take the lead in this.’

In the 21st century, it is becoming increasingly important to be aware of how technology can affect businesses.

And Councillor McNeilly believes that young people should be doing more than just consuming technology – they should be creating online digital content as well.

The more opportunities students receive in the classroom at a young age to enhance their technological skills, the more likely their chances of success in later life.
