Screwfix Oban jobs boost
Screwfix has confirmed it will be opening a store in Oban this summer, creating 12 jobs.
Argyll and Bute Council recently approved a planning application for a change of use of Unit 1 at Hazelbank Motors from a car showroom to storage or distribution with external alterations.
The biggest change on the application shows a new entrance being created. ‘The main activity will be the supply of building materials to local builders and related services,’ the planning application said. ‘Screwfix Direct Limited would make a positive contribution to the commercial and community life of the area providing essential trade counter services to local businesses.’
A spokesperson for Screwfix said: ‘We have been looking to open in Oban for a considerable time.’
Andrew Spence, chief executive of BID4Oban, said: ‘BID4Oban is delighted to hear of a new business opening in Oban. As the fastest growing town in Argyll, it is clear Oban is becoming an attractive location for new businesses to expand into. Screwfix will give residents and trade customers another place to shop without leaving the town and we welcome the additional jobs it will provide.’
The new store will employ 12 members of staff, four of whom will be full-time.
Iain Coates, director of Hazelbank Motors Oban, said: ‘Nothing is confirmed. From our point of view it is business as usual.
‘We are refurbishing the front of the building and moving to the rear of our existing premises.’
Mr Coates said the building has an asbestos roof and the development of the front of the store would take several months.
